Murray River Council is proud to showcase one of the region’s latest business success stories: Australian Farming Services’ (AFS) state-of-the-art almond processing facility in Murray Downs. This new facility, which opened earlier this year, represents a major leap forward in sustainable, efficient agribusiness and reinforces our region’s status as an agricultural powerhouse.
A Cutting-Edge Almond Processing Facility
The new processing facility in Murray Downs, strategically located close to AFS’s expansive almond orchards, is a game-changer for the region. With a 35,000-tonne capacity, the facility not only boosts productivity but also delivers significant environmental benefits. By reducing the need for long-distance freight, AFS is minimising fuel consumption and road wear, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and local economic growth.
Advanced Technology for Premium Quality
What sets this facility apart is its integration of cutting-edge technology. Equipped with industry-leading LMC hulling and shelling equipment, BM&M screens, and an Alvan Blanch high-capacity dryer, the site guarantees the highest quality processing. The facility also features advanced sorting systems from TOMRA and Satake, ensuring precision in almond grading and packaging.
AFS has also incorporated automated bagging and sorting technology, which, alongside a refrigerated warehouse with automated guided vehicles (AGVs), streamlines operations and enhances efficiency. This not only benefits AFS but also adds significant value to the region’s agricultural supply chain.
Commitment to Sustainability
AFS is dedicated to minimising its environmental footprint, and this new facility is a testament to that commitment. Initially powered by the grid, the processing plant will soon be supplemented by a 4.5MW solar farm, further reducing its reliance on non-renewable energy. This initiative aligns with the broader push towards renewable energy that is being embraced by businesses throughout the Murray River region.
Supporting Economic Growth in the Murray River Region
Located in Murray Downs, just a short distance from Barham and Moama, this facility strengthens our region’s reputation as a hub for agribusiness innovation. It highlights the strategic advantages that businesses in the Murray River region enjoy—proximity to prime agricultural land, a highly skilled workforce, and excellent transport links to domestic and international markets.
As AFS continues to grow, the economic benefits ripple across the region, supporting local suppliers, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy.
